One of the questions I hear most often is, “Why is custom furniture so expensive?”
The answer begins long before a table, bench, or cabinet reaches a customer’s home.
Unlike mass-produced furniture, custom furniture starts with carefully selected hardwood. For many of my projects, I purchase rough slabs from local sawmills and have them kiln dried before they ever enter the shop. Months—or even years—may pass between harvesting the tree and building the finished piece.
Once a slab is selected, the real work begins. The wood must be flattened, cleaned, stabilized, and prepared. Cracks are repaired, voids are filled when needed, and every piece is evaluated for both strength and beauty.
Design is another major part of the process. Each project is built specifically for a customer’s space and needs. Dimensions, wood species, base style, finish, and overall appearance are carefully planned before construction starts.
Building custom furniture is not assembly-line work. Every cut, joint, and detail is completed individually. A dining table can require dozens of hours of milling, joinery, sanding, finishing, and final assembly.
The finish itself is often one of the most time-consuming stages. Multiple rounds of sanding and finishing are necessary to highlight the natural beauty of the wood while protecting it for years of daily use.
Beyond labor, custom furniture makers invest in expensive equipment, shop space, premium hardwoods, finishing products, and years of experience developing their craft.
What customers receive is not simply furniture. They receive a one-of-a-kind piece built specifically for their home, using materials selected for beauty and longevity.
Mass-produced furniture is designed to be replaced. Custom furniture is designed to be kept.
